Even twenty years ago a democratic meeting (town Hall meetings) were held in a public setting. During the presidential campaign there was a series of “town hall meetings” public gatherings were typical and a major part of Americans in particular exercising their democratic rights.

However if you look now the majority of meetings are taking place on-line. There is a society on the Internet that makes the rules, sets up larger town hall meeting ever thought imaginable. These meeting also conduct flash mobs or larger than expected public town hall meeting turnouts.

The Internet has done the same job as travel has done. Let me explain: As travel around the country got better so did the advancement of free thinking people, people demanding equality from the gov’t and also the spread of disease. People simply had better networking to each other and their brains. This also plays hand with air travel and a better understanding of our world. The Internet has done the same. We are more connected to the plight of people around the world. (i/e third world countries, human rights violations etc.)

The Internet has indeed become a public sphere including all things that normally would have been only expected in the town gathering format. Theorists like Lyotard, and Rorty liken these meetings to macro politics surpassing the established institutions (Lister 178). The Internet offers highly specific and limited engagements.

Check out Twitter there you can get very current information about people personal lives but more importantly people “tweeting” about meetings, agendas, and things of concern to us all around the world. http://www.twitter.com

Wikipedia Artical KDKA Pittsburgh or Wilkinsburg

I could not really think of something I’m passionate about that would be seen on Wikipedia. However I am from Pittsburgh, born and raised. There was an article about the first radio station in American being from a neighboring town in Pittsburgh when actually the station was created and run in Pittsburgh. I went to the FRAUD town’s website and deleted the paragraph attributing the creation of the first ever radio station to a city called Wilkinsburg. Going to the Wikipedia page of the station it confirms my arguement that the station was created in Pittsburgh and NOT Wilkinsburg.

Information about 8XK also know as KDKA has been removed from this article. KDKA (8XK) was not founded in Wilkinsburg. The station later licensed as KDKA was started in the neighboring city of Pittsburgh.

Reading and Ranting.

I remember hearing a story about how a mother posed as her son on a instant message site. Basically the mother posing as her own son degraded the girl and told her she should just end her life. The girl did just that that night.

Stories like these most of course less sever show how easily someone can fak an idenity on the internet to get desired outcomes. now I’m sure the mother’s intentions were to get the girl to break up with her son, however she didn’t know the effect the son had on his girlfriedn.

it’s so easy to post to Facebook, or MySpace whatever you want, whatever pictures you want, information you want, and lie about anything.

One thing is the new concept of friends and things of that nature. Who is considered a friend. I have MySpace “Friends” and Facebook “Friends”. It’s hunmorous because these are ppl that is this were ten years ago I’d have no contact with possibly for the rest of my life. However these and other social networks help us keep and touch and continue to lear about each others life changes.

Now the reading. I had no idea that survivor was such a big deal amoung so many people. I also had no idea that so many people devote so much of their time findin out who “wins” the game. I remember hearing that off the set of these survivor shows are groumet catered carts for everyone to enjoy after devouring worms and cockroaches. I think that if the community has so many “spoilers” and spoiler haters they should find other outlets to use this energy. Why not take up recycleing or something else more productive.

Examples

The reading main focus was very much in line with what we talked about in last Wednesday’s class. The writer went in to depth on how new and old media are alike and have very little differences. The author also went on to expound about how new media is just some improved version of old media – i.e. On line news is just a digital form of the traditional news-paper

One thing I can think of when it comes to new media being forced into the the homes of develping counteries, like American and digital television.

What I took from the reading that was most profound, was the idea of desensitization. There are some products that come out these days that even five years ago would seem too amazing. Nonetheless when we see these new products (i/e/ iPhone – Mini notebooks) we’re just like “oh that’s cool” and we look for the even better version in a couple months

It will be quite interesting to see the route taken in this class to address these ideas, and ways media is marketed.
